NATIONAL REDRESS SCHEME

The National Redress Scheme acknowledges and provides support to people who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse. It was established by the Federal Government in response to the findings and recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse to facilitate redress to those who have been abused by individuals belonging to institutions.

Redress offers an alternative to seeking compensation through the courts.

The offer of redress can include three things:

  • access to counselling

  • a payment, and

  • a direct personal response from the institution (e.g. an apology) for people who want one.

The Scheme started on 1 July 2018 and will run for 10 years.

For more information about the National Redress Scheme, visit the National Redress website or call the National Redress Information Line on 1800 737 377.

Other avenues for compensation

Those who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse may wish to take other avenues for compensation.

You may be able to receive compensation by:

  • making an application to your state or territory specific victims’ support services;

  • making an application for a reparation payment with a court;

  • taking legal action against the person and/or institution responsible for your injuries (civil claims)
