“As well as the many gifts and achievements of the late Pope, which no doubt will be detailed in the days of remembrance to come, we acknowledge his life of dedicated service to Christ and to the Church to which he was so deeply committed as a man of faith, as a priest, as bishop and pope,” said Peter Jones OSA, President of CRA.

The controversial decision of Pope Benedict XVI to step down from office in 2013, citing health issues and enabling room for fresh leadership, was considered innovative and courageous by many people.

“It was expressive of a personal humility and a discerning heart that sought a positive way forward for the Church”, commented CRA National Executive Director, Ms Anne Walker. “At the time of his election as Pope, he took on the mantle of leadership during a challenging time for the global Catholic community, and he accepted the responsibility, and cost, of office with dignity, generosity and grace.”

CRA extends sincere condolences to all who were close to the late Pope, and to all who mourn his passing. May he rest in peace.
