With deep sadness, we honour the life and legacy of Sister Carmel Hanson RSJ, the Congregational Leader of the Sisters of St Joseph, Lochinvar and a woman whose unwavering compassion and dedication have inspired so many, creating a lasting impact on our community.
As the founder of the House of Hospitality and a devoted, Carmel dedicated over 30 years to providing shelter and support to those most in need—women and children fleeing domestic violence, asylum seekers, and individuals on the path to recovery. Her work was a true testament to the power of service and advocacy.
Earlier this year, she was recognised as Newcastle’s Local Woman of the Year, a well-deserved acknowledgement of her tireless commitment to social justice. She believed deeply that housing is a human right, and she worked every day to make that belief a reality.
Carmel’s impact extends far beyond the walls of the House of Hospitality—her kindness, vision, and dedication have shaped a more compassionate society and inspired countless individuals to take action in their own communities. As well, Carmel was energetic and filled with fun.
Her words continue to challenge and inspire us:
"I would like to see a time where every homeless person has a roof over their heads. I wish, today, that the state would recognise that housing is a human right."
As we remember and celebrate her life, may we carry forward her mission, ensuring that her legacy of love and advocacy continues to change lives. Rest in perfect peace, Carmel.
