The Sisters of Mercy Parramatta have unveiled plans to open a new seniors’ home for women at risk of homelessness in Sydney’s northwest, The Hills Shire Times reports.
The Sisters have lodged plans to demolish existing buildings at 522 Windsor Road in Baulkham Hills.
The site, which has been owned by the sisters for more than 100 years, has been vacant since 2012 after St Michael's Family Centre was shut down.
Plans include building a new $11.8m seniors’ living home for women with almost 30 units.
Five existing villas will also be retained and refurbished.
A Sisters of Mercy representative said the vision was to help women at risk of homelessness including victims of domestic violence.
“There is a fundamental commitment to helping those in risk of homelessness,” she said.
She said statistics showed single women aged 55 and over were most at risk of homelessness.
“We want to give them emergency and affordable housing at a time when they need it most,” she said.
“The vision is to reinvigorate the site to house women. We also plan to build a few more villas for sisters living on the site.”
